Loss

it comes in a sudden
it comes without fear
it comes to test your faith
and tell you who's dear.

no wait. it does not come, it goes.

it rinses through you and goes
how do you have faith that it'll all stay
that one day you may
just be able to hold on.

death of a loved one, always comes and goes with a dismay.

7.0 earthquake in Haiti

For those of you who've heard the news, Haiti got hit by a 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday. It's been the biggest one in 200 years, but that's besides the point.
The point is, the entire place is a mess. Imagine your entire city, your entire country is just a pile of rubble and bodies, then look closely and see that it's happening to Haitians.

I can't say I entirely understand the situation, but I can for one thing say that as a global citizen, I have obligations to help. And I'd really want to spread the word and let you all know about it, and know what you can do to help as well.

If you want to learn more about the situation, here's a few sources:
The Toronto Star
The New York Times

What can you do about the situations? Help out with Haiti relief, there's many different ways. For one thing, find an organization you trust and make donations. A lot of them have already sent people there to provide immediate relief and updates. Let your community know about the situation. I understand that there are scams going around, but don't let it deter you from believing in the better parts of us. There are a lot of stores/products out there that are now donating their proceeds towards Haiti earthquake relief.
For example, at McGill, the AUS decided to donate their proceeds from DUSTED, an event, to Oxfam; they're also collecting money with jars and holding a bake sale...
Canada is actually matching dollar by dollar to all donations you make to a recognized charity.
Free the Children has been shipping out supplies, sending staff there for updates; Craig himself has been to a conference in discussion in Miami of what to do, and just updated us on him arriving at the Dajabon border... I myself will be collecting donations on the streets on behalf of Free the Children.
Jedidiah Clothing has designed Haiti Relief Tees and are donating 100% of proceeds towards Haiti Relief

Like I've said, beaware of scams... the best way to avoid it is to look into organizations, make sure you can track where your money's going, what their doing.
Personally, I've been in the loop with Free the Children as I'm part of their core volunteer group (the mobilizers) in Montréal. Craig Kielburger has also done a fabulous job on updates (even on twitter and facebook!) I also get regular e-mails about what they're doing. I can feel like my efforts are going the right way.
Here are a few organizations I have an amount of faith in:
Free The Children
Oxfam
Unicef

Do what you can do, whether it's taking out the time/ the $$. Let your community know about it. I do believe in human kindness, in social awareness, just don't give up and help Haiti stay strong. They really need your support.

Keep Haiti in your prayers as well.

I will conclude with the famous quote from Gandhi,
" You must BE THE CHANGE you want to see in the world"

somethings just slip away
silently
without notifying someone
without someone noticing

it's not that one doesn't go back in search for it
but when it's gone it's gone
it leaves no traces
just memories to sip on in your tea
